MPs have expressed shock that almost a third of 18-year-olds with special educational needs are not in any form of education, employment or training. Nick Clegg has unveiled ‘a pioneering scheme’ to get 16- and 17-year-olds who are out of work and not in education, earning or learning again. The Government's flagship academies are four times more likely to expel pupils than normal schools, data shows, prompting fresh claims they are abusing their powers to boost results. Profit-making firms are making hundreds of millions of pounds from the state education system, according to new research. Private companies should be encouraged to run state schools as profit-making enterprises under a “John Lewis-style” business model, a think tank suggests. Religious education is being undermined by a "crippling ambivalence" towards the subject in state schools, according to research. A primary school in Essex is giving its pupils speech lessons to aid their spelling and grammar. Exams and Further Education: Exam boards are considering imposing strict new curbs on examiners in the wake of allegations that some are divulging to teachers the questions pupils will be asked. Exams boards have been ordered to tighten up GCSEs in four key subjects amid fears they are becoming easier to pass. There has been a 27% drop in the number of full-time undergraduate degree courses offered at UK universities over the past six years, data shows. New visa rules mean the UK’s top universities and schools are in danger of losing their appeal to foreign students, according to a report.
