Whitney Houston dies, age 48

Singer and international celebrity Whitney Houston has been found dead in her hotel room in LA.

Emergency services were called to the hotel at 15.43 PST and the singer was declared dead some ten minutes later at 15.55 PST.

Lt Mark Rosen of the Beverly Hills Police Department said that attempts were made to resuscitate Houston by emergency staff.

“There were no obvious signs of any criminal intent at this time and it is currently being investigated by the Beverley Hills police detectives.”

Houston was staying at the Beverley Hilton in Los Angeles ahead of tonight's Grammy Awards, which she was due to attend.

She is known as one of the  most iconic singers of her generation, with the record sales for her first two albums alone totalling over 45 million worldwide.

In more recent years, however, there was much media speculation over the impact her troubled 14 year marriage to Bobby Brown, and her subsequent drug abuse, had on her career.

In an interview with US chat show host Diane Sawyer, in which Houston discussed her drug habit and tumultuous marriage, she said, “The biggest devil is me. I’m either by best friend or my worst enemy.”

Tributes from fans and celebrities across the world are, however, focusing on the loss of the undoubted talent of one of the world’s best known singers.

Dolly Parton, who wrote one of Houston’s biggest-selling hits, I Will Always Love You, said, “Mine is only one of the millions of hearts broken over the death of Whitney Houston. I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song.”
