Teaching News and Events (17/3/12) Posted: 17 Mar 2012 03:00 AM PDT Here are links to some of this week’s education-related news: Schools: A new Ofsted report examining English teaching has found that while in many schools English teaching is effective and pupils make good progress, standards in English are not high enough and, since 2008, there has been no overall improvement in primary pupils' learning. Adrian Prandle from the Association of Teachers and Lecturers has rebuffed these claims. One in two schoolchildren find science and maths too difficult or too boring to study despite seven in 10 wanting science-based careers, a poll has found. Teachers should allow pupils to learn maths by using it rather than focusing on abstract concepts, says an expert. More than half of secondary school children are being taught in mixed ability lessons, figures suggest, despite fears bright pupils can be held back by weaker classmates. Schools Minister Nick Gibb has announced a new national award scheme to recognise the top achievers in every secondary school in England – and those showing great potential. The education system is at crisis point because of a lack of primary school places, a leading academic has warned. Examiners are closely vetting primary school test papers to ensure they do not discriminate against children on the grounds of race or gender, it has emerged. Foreign languages are making a comeback in schools following government reforms designed to downgrade "soft subjects". Other News: Teaching must be made more attractive for the brightest students, says a report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Three massive halls in Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre have been roaring with excited children, exploding exhibits and scientists and engineers buzzing with answers. Roald Dahl is teachers’ favourite author and Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo is chosen as the best book for children.
