The world has lost a legend. Amarillo Slim, the winner of 4 WSOP bracelets but known more for his acts of self promotion and outrageous bets has passed away, aged 82. I particularly enjoy the story of how he held a table-tennis match against former Wimbledon champion Bobby Riggs for a considerable sum of money under the stipulation that he chose the rackets. Slim showed up holding two frying pans that he had practiced for weeks with and Riggs duly lost the match. He later played a table tennis world champion, and again made the racket stipulation as part of the deal. The champion, having heard of Slims previous stunt, accordingly practiced with frying pans, but Slim showed up with two empty Coke bottles - and won again. Slim was a man from a different era and I doubt we will see his like again - just like Len Ainsworth, the guest editor of our "Technology in Casinos" special section (appropriately, turned upside down). Len has kindly provided our foreword and Ainsworth feature alongside other companies recently catching our technological eye. This edition of the magazine marks our seventh year. Does anyone vaguely remember the one-day last-gasp slot extravaganza held in Moscow back in 2005? I seem to recall champagne, cigars and a lot of grass skirts and then it all gets very blurry. Well, the idea for an operator-focused magazine germinated back then and since that time we have developed it to be just that; a readable magazine that provides an insight into different international casinos. That we have achieved that is backed up by our latest endorsement from Dick Flint, the CEO of Holland Casino BV. Our operator features this issue focus on an interview with Peter Hoetzinger Co-Chief Executive Officer of Century Casinos Inc and Duncan Savage Managing Director of Rainbow Casinos in Birmingham. As G2E Asia is probably the nearest event to our birthday we will probably be having a glass or two of bubbly on our stand - 652 - in Macau. e hope to see you there.
