The UK Casino industry welcomes gambling report

The National Casino Industry Forum (NCiF) today welcomed the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee’s report on the Gambling Act 2005.

NCiF chairman Malcolm Moss said:

“We are very pleased the committee has recognised the value, integrity and achievements of the British casino industry.

With over 19 million visits a year, casinos already play an important part in Britain’s tourism industry and they can contribute still more to the Government’s growth agenda. Modest reforms to gambling laws could generate 4,000 – 5,000 new jobs and £70 – 80 million in additional taxes.

We are pleased that the committee has identified the failings of the 2005 Act in creating a twin-track industry which puts British businesses at a disadvantage and costs jobs and investment. Harmonising the rules on the number and type of gambling products all casinos can have will customer confusion and make it clear what to expect from a UK casino.

The availability of gambling on the internet now renders many of the restrictions on land-based casinos irrelevant and we welcome the committee’s endorsement that our casinos provide the safest places for gambling and therefore now deserve to offer the widest product choice.

We are delighted the committee has accepted our evidence that the decision as to whether a casino would be of benefit to a local area should be made by local authorities rather than by central diktat.

Crucially the changes would not increase the number of casinos allowed in the UK. I hope the Government now acts on these recommendations and does something positive to help the UK growth agenda.”

The National Casino Industry Forum is a trade association that represents over 90% of the UK's casino sector.
