Published / Preprint: Recommendation systems in the scope of opinion formation: a model Posted: 14 Aug 2012 01:13 AM PDT Aggregated data in real world recommender applications often feature fat-tailed distributions of the number of times individual items have been rated or favored. We propose a model to simulate such data. The model is mainly based on social interactions and opinion formation taking place on a complex network with a given topology. A threshold mechanism is used to govern the decision making process... Visit MoneyScience for the Complete Article. |

Blog Post: Falkenblog: Institutions Need More Shareholder Maximization Posted: 13 Aug 2012 08:25 PM PDT Joe Nocera wrote in last Friday's NYT that Over time, âmaximizing shareholder valueâ became viewed as the primary task of the corporation. And, well, you can see the results all around you. Theyâre not pretty. For some reason, he thinks a profit maximizer maximizes short-term profits at the expense of longer term ones. Now, that's easy to see with hindsight applied to various trades we all... Visit MoneyScience for the Complete Article. |
Posted: 13 Aug 2012 05:33 PM PDT When the full stock of a new product is quickly sold in a few days or weeks, one has the impression that new technologies develop and conquer the market in a very easy way. This may be true for some new technologies, for example the cell phone, but not for others, like the blue-ray. Novelty, usefulness, advertising, price, and fashion are the driving forces behind the adoption of a new product.... Visit MoneyScience for the Complete Article. |
Posted: 13 Aug 2012 05:33 PM PDT We establish higher-order weighted Sobolev and H\"older regularity for solutions to variational equations defined by the elliptic Heston operator, a linear second-order degenerate-elliptic operator arising in mathematical finance. Furthermore, given $C^\infty$-smooth data, we prove $C^\infty$-regularity of solutions up to the portion of the boundary where the operator is degenerate....
