Teaching News and Events (16/3/13) Posted: 16 Mar 2013 03:00 AM PDT Here are links to some of this week’s education-related news: A quarter of a million extra school places will be needed in England by autumn 2014 to meet rising demand, the National Audit Office (NAO) is warning. The take-up of ‘tough’ subjects like maths at A-level in England may drop if AS-levels are removed as a ‘stepping stone’, head teachers have warned. The government’s scheme to rebuild England’s most crumbling schools is being held up by delays in finding private cash to fund it. A supply teacher agency claims that some schools on the outskirts of London seem reluctant to hire ethnic minority temporary staff. Sports governing bodies have given their approval to the government’s new school sports policy, However, headteachers, teachers and sports administrators have privately voiced concern that the policy may fail to deliver the hoped-for legacy from the London 2012 Games. There is virtually no drug or alcohol education for most secondary school pupils, and more should be done to teach them about what they might be putting into their bodies, Mitch Winehouse has said. Musician and businessman Levi Roots has embarked on a national tour of schools in a bid to inspire pupils to cook.
