10 Resources for World Literacy Day

There are a number of wonderful educational events taking place next week. Click on the links below to see our previous lists of 10 great resources for these special days:

World Literacy Day is also happening on 5th March, so here are 10 great resources that you could use to celebrate the day.

1) World Literacy Day is part of the World Education Games. The official site allows children to practise their spelling and language skills in competitive online games. A special iPad app is also available allowing you to compete using a mobile device.

2) Spellathon have a similar spelling competition that children can play. There are free resources and prizes to be won!

3) Woodlands Junior School have a wonderful collection of links and activities that children can use to practise a wide range of Literacy skills.

4) SEN Teacher provide a number of interactive Literacy printables that can be used in a variety of ways as part of Literacy activities in the classroom.

5) Teaching Ideas has a popular Literacy section that is full of free ideas and resources, including banners, posters and activity sheets. The Library area also has lesson ideas that are linked to popular children’s books.

6) Ookaboo offers ‘free pictures of everything on Earth’. The photos are all organised into different categories (e.g. places, organisations, lifeforms, technology and people) and it’s a great way of finding images to use for Literacy activities.

7) Panoramas.dk is another amazing site with images that can be used to inspire writing and other Literacy tasks. The photos are all virtual reality panoramas, so you can scroll around them and zoom in / out. They look great on a large display in the classroom!

8 ) Teach your Monster to Read is a great way of helping younger children to practise the first steps of reading. The free site offers fun games that encourage children to use their phonics skills and offers assessment tools for teachers.

9) The Literacy Shed offers a fantastic range of visual resources to use in Literacy lessons. There are lots of wonderful videos with suggested ways of using them in the classroom.

10) Bev Evans’ wonderful site, Communication4All, has lots of printable downloads for Literacy, ranging from alphabet cards to posters and whiteboard activities.
