I’ve been taking a break to spend time with my family and to work on some other projects (which I’m hoping to be able to share with you soon). Here are links to some of this week’s education-related news: Schools: Pupils in England should spend more hours at school each day and have shorter holidays, the Education Secretary Michael Gove has argued. The Department for Education has published advice helping schools decide how to pay their teachers. Restrictions that bar classroom teachers from routine administrative tasks such as photocopying and filing could be ended under an independent review of teachers’ contracts ordered by the education secretary, Michael Gove. More pressure must be put on state schools to get Welsh pupils into the UK’s top universities, MP and former Welsh Secretary Paul Murphy has urged. The Chief Inspector of Education in England Sir Michael Wilshaw wants to get tougher on nurseries and childminders that are currently judged “satisfactory”. New research has found that taking lessons outside can actually help young people learn later in life. Around 60,000 children will be forced to attend second, third or fourth-choice primary schools in September because of a surge in demand for the most popular places. Bright pupils from poor homes who achieve top GCSE scores will receive congratulation letters from ministers, under a plan announced on Thursday. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is planning a Shakespeare Week, saying it wants every child in Britain to understand the playwright’s legacy. New Curriculum: Plans to overhaul England’s primary maths teaching would be “too much too soon” and could leave many pupils “by the wayside”, a numeracy charity says. Controversial plans to change what has to be taught in England’s schools are being rushed in and could “create chaos”, head teachers say. Business leaders claim the “sheer scale of prescription” in the new science curriculum will leave pupils in England little time for practical experiments. Sex education in schools is at risk of being “watered down” if proposed changes to England’s science curriculum go ahead, experts have warned. More than 65,000 people have signed petitions urging the government to keep climate change in the national curriculum for England.
