10 Resources for Walk to School Week Posted: 19 May 2013 02:00 AM PDT
Walk to School week takes place from Monday 20th May to Friday 24 May 2013, so here are 10 great resources that can be used to encourage children to get walking! 1) The official site has lots of free learning resources to use every day next week. The resources include assembly resources, challenge cards, puzzle sheets and lesson plans. 2) TravelMatters have a number of downloadable resources, including an alphabet challenge, a playscript and display images and letters. 3) Walkit have some useful information about why we should walk to school more. Could your children use this to write a persuasive report or create a poster encouraging children to walk? 4) The WWF have a special assembly that helps children to understand the benefits of walking to school. 5) The International Walk to School site (which celebrates the event at a different time) has a number of downloadable resources for teachers, parents and children to use. 6) Walk4Life has a number of resources for teachers, including activities for KS2 children, a certificate and a teacher’s pack. 7) I’ve also made some new Walk to School resources and posted them on Teaching Ideas. The resources include a ‘Why Walk?’ activity sheet, certificates and leaderboards for the children who walk to school the most and some footprints for a display. 8 ) KentTrustWeb has a wonderful document that offers a complete guide to promoting walking to school for primary teachers. 9) Living Streets has produced a video that looks about the benefits of walking and has ideas for different ways to fit walking into your day. This could be used with children in the classroom… and could inspire classes to make their own persuasive videos!
