Plan for £25m hotel and casino in Glasgow city centre Posted: 27 Jun 2013 08:36 AM PDT A £25MILLION hotel and casino project opposite Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art in Royal Exchange Square will go before planners tomorrow. Glasgow Evening Times It would result in shops at ground and first-floor levels, around 1000sq m of leisure space on the second floor, a spa and further leisure space on the third floor, a hotel with 96 bedrooms over the fourth to ninth floors and a double height public bar on the 11th floor. The plan also involves using part of the basement as leisure and bar space. The intended opening hours of the bar and leisure facilities are from 8am until 3am with the shops opening from 9.30am to 8pm. The development in the Central Conservation Area would result in A-listed buildings being modified and B-listed buildings being partially demolished. Richard Brown, Glasgow City Council’s executive director of development and regeneration, has recomm-ended it gets full planning permission. He says in a report: “The current proposals represent a very significant regener-ation opportunity.”The proposals would make use of part of the vacant and derelict land within the city centre and would deliver successful regeneration of a key city centre site. “They would also attract economic activity by providing 250 direct jobs.”The development will deliver significant economic benefit to Glasgow in a number of ways. “Firstly, it can generate additional taxes and rates at both a Glasgow City Council and at a national level. “Significantly, it will deliver a positive boost to the economy through much- needed jobs. “One of the findings of the independent economic impact report is that the retail aspect of the proposals will augment the offering on Buchanan Street and the Style Mile rather than competing with it.” Objectors have raised concerns about the pressure the development, proposed by leisure and property millionaire James Mortimer, would put on police. But Mr Brown says: “There have been anti-social issues surrounding this site, although these are a symptom of its current condition and vacancy.” It is understood many of premises in the area of the development, from Royal Exchange Square to Spring-field Court are lying empty. http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk

Shoot the Birdie hits the spot for CHIPS Posted: 27 Jun 2013 08:01 AM PDT
MILTON KEYNES, UK (June 27th) – Ninety of the industry's more adventurous sportsmen gathered at Whittlebury Park near Milton Keynes for the first Praesepe 'Shoot the Birdie' day, held in support of the company's charity partner, CHIPS. Combining two of the industry's sporting passions – golf and clay pigeon shooting – 'Shoot the birdie' succeeded in raising additional funds for CHIPS, which, since its formation, has generated in excess of £1m to purchase 400 bespoke powered wheelchairs to young people for whom the NHS is unable to help. The English Sporting format saw Terry Farr of AMG Leisure become the Pool Shoot Winner, with Will Sutton of Praesepe named Individual Winner. One Hit Wonders, comprising Nick Harding, Will Sutton (both Praesepe), James Sutton (Vibrotech) and Kevin Sutton (Met Police) were named Team Shoot Winners. Honours in the Stapleford golf went to: Sandy Barnett, 38pts (Team Wessex Coin); Rob Knight, 36pts (Team Bingo Buddies); Amos Mutaba, 36pts (Team 700 Refrideration). The team prize went to Wessex Coin, with Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin shared by James Coxon and Pete Gill and Jonathan Powell and Digby Koe respectively. The day was deemed a massive success as Terry Farr underlined: "It was a great and novel idea to combine the golf and the shooting in the same day and at the same fantastic venue. CHIPS is a tremendous charity and it's always nice to meet the people running such worthwhile causes. It's extremely refreshing that every penny of the money raised goes for the actual benefit of those children in need. I hope this event becomes cemented in the industry calendar." Nick Harding, CEO of Praesepe added: "Anyone who has had the slightest involvement with CHIPS will confirm what a brilliant charity it is and how it has succeeded in changing the lives of so many families. Every single one of the 1,600 people who work for Praesepe has contributed to CHIPS, as have so many of our friends and colleagues in the industry. For CHIPS to have raised more than £1m, exclusively from the gaming industry, is a magnificent achievement that deserves wide recognition. 'Shoot the Birdie' was a huge success and a different way of bringing the industry together for a really positive cause. I am delighted to confirm, that based on the great feedback that we've received, we will be staging the second 'Shoot the Birdie' on Friday June 6th, 2014. My sincere thanks go to all of the sponsors, supporters and participants for helping us to raise £3,000 on the day."
