10 Tennis Resources to Teach Children about Wimbledon

Wimbledon takes place from 24th June to 7th July this year, so here are 10 great resources that could be used to help children to learn about the event and about tennis:

1) The official Wimbledon site has a huge amount of information that can be used for independent research by children. The site features the latest news, player profiles, video / audio feeds and photo galleries. When the competition starts, could your pupils use some of the statistics for data handling activities?

2) The official site also has a great timeline showing the history of Wimbledon. Could your children find out what happened in Wimbledon in the year that they were born… or make their own timeline showing the main events?

3) The LTA has a large site that is full of advice about getting started in tennis. There is also a special Schools area that has resources and information for teachers.

4) Tennis Theme has a clear summary of the history of Wimbledon, with some old photographs too. The rest of the site also has information about the history of tennis and other tennis events.

5) The Essential Tennis Youtube channel has some great instructional videos showing different tennis techniques, along with videos from professional players.

6) The Tennis4You site has lots of ideas and activities to teach children about tennis, along with workshops and instructional videos.

7) Sportplan have an enormous collection of tennis drills and games. Registration is required to view them, but this is free.

8) Teaching Tennis have 10 great games to use with children who are first learning about tennis.

9) Our Teaching Ideas site also has some banners, alphabet display letters, paper templates, posters and vocabulary cards that can be used as part of lessons about Wimbledon and tennis.

10) Activity Village also have some free printables to use as part of a ‘Tennis’ topic, including certificates, acrostic poems, bookmarks and writing paper.
