10 Resources for World Environment Day

World Environment Day takes place on 5th June. It is ‘an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action’. Here are 10 great resources that could be used by schools who are planning to get involved in the day.

1) Our Teaching Ideas site has a wide range of resources to use as part of activities to teach children about the environment. The Environmental Inspiration Posters are a great starting point for discussion about different topics.

2) The BBC has a huge selection of information and resources about environmental studies. Their collection is so large that they have a special guide to everything that is available!

3) One of the BBC’s most popular resources are their Class Clips videos. These are short film clips that can be used by schools as part of their lessons. Their list of ‘Environmental Issues’ videos can be found here.

4) Teacher’s Pet have some classroom resources that can be used as part of lessons about the environment. Their ‘Renewable Energy Posters look particularly useful.

5) The Green Squad is an interactive site that children can explore to find out how we can take action for greener and healthier schools.

6) The wonderful Topmarks site has a great directory of educational sites. Their list of environmental links is well worth exploring.

7) Teaching Videos has a large collection of videos that cover different environmental issues.

8 ) National Geographic have a wonderful site that features pictures, news, blogs and magazine articles about the environment. They also have a special ‘Kids’ section that children can explore.

9) Children can learn about the environment by taking part in the interactive Environmental Intelligence Unit! I’ve used this in the classroom before and the children really enjoyed it.

10) Kids.gov have links to lots of recommended sites that children can use to learn more about the environment. This will take a very long time to explore!
