- Union have warned of more regional strikes and a national one-day walkout across England and Wales in the autumn.
- The schools budget for England will remain protected from budget cuts in the government’s spending review.
- The government has pledged to spend £10bn repairing school buildings in England up to 2021 and says a scheme to re-build the worst schools will be finished two years ahead of schedule.
- Rapid expansion of the government’s academy and free school programme has exacerbated a chronic shortage of places for children, the House of Commons’ spending watchdog has warned. However, schools will offer places to another half a million children within the next decade to cope with a surge in the population, ministers have said.
- Britain’s primary school teachers are by far the youngest among developed countries, and its teachers across all levels are younger than their European counterparts.
