Schools could be closed or partially shut well into the spring term because of the bitter stand-off between Britain's two biggest teaching unions and Michael Gove, the Education Secretary. Michael Gove has been urged to monitor free schools more closely after a Muslim faith school was closed temporarily because of safety concerns. Millions of children in England and Wales are held back by their parents’ poor basic skills, suggests a report. Premature babies are more likely go on to struggle at school and be diagnosed with learning difficulties than children born at full term, according to research. Six out of 10 teenagers say they have been asked for sexual images or videos, an NSPCC/ChildLine survey programme suggests. Children as young as 10 have been taught about domestic violence in a pilot scheme which could now be rolled out across Wales. Slang such as “ain’t”, “innit” and “coz” has been banned from a school in south London to try to help students find future employment. Large numbers of children in Britain are missing out on the natural world, a study from the RSPB suggests.
