Schools will be encouraged to provide at least one extra maths lesson a week and place greater focus on spelling and grammar in English as part of a radical overhaul of core GCSE subjects, according to The Telegraph. Almost 3% of this summer’s exam papers were given extra marks because of pupils having problems such as a temporary illness, the highest level on record. A petition demanding the government reverse a ban on schoolchildren in England taking holidays during term-time has been delivered to the Department for Education. An inner city primary is at the heart of a project to test how technology can be used to boost children’s learning. A competition to find the world’s best teacher is to be launched next year, with a prize of $1m (£620,000). A former archbishop of Canterbury is backing a campaign effectively to delay the start of formal education until the age of seven. Internet forums and chatrooms can have positive effects that should be more widely acknowledged, experts say. Ofcom have published their annual report into media use and attitudes of children and parents.
