- National curriculum tests for 14-year-olds in England’s school should be reintroduced, says the chief inspector of schools, Sir Michael Wilshaw.
- The number of pupils in state schools is set to grow by a million over the next decade to reach its highest level in more than 40 years, according to official estimates.
- The government’s flagship free school programme will cost at least three times the sum originally allocated, the public spending watchdog has found.
- Schools are being forced to "sideline" key subjects such as art, music and physical education in the race to hit government targets, teachers' leaders have warned.
