It’s National Poetry Day in the UK on Thursday October 4th, so here are 10 great resources that can help you to take part in the day. Even if you’re not in the UK, why not have your own poetry celebrations too?

1) The official site gives more information about the event along with poems and resources for you to use. You can also follow the event on Facebook and Twitter.

2) The Poetry Archive is a huge archive of poets reading their own poems. You can find poems by name, poet, poetic terms, themes or form and there is also a special Children’s Poetry Archive.

3) Poetry.com encourages people to submit their own poems which are then reviewed by the community who uses the site. Could your pupils submit some of their poetry?

4) Teaching Ideas has a number of resources to help children with their reading and understanding of poetry, as well as writing it.

5) The BBC’s Bitesize site has a number of great poetry resources, including a poetry game:

6) Poetry4Kids has a large collection of funny poems with some great recordings by the poet, Kenn Nesbitt. The site also has poetry writing lessons, poetry games, poetry podcasts and a rhyming dictionary.

7) The BBC’s ‘Class Clips’ site has videos showing a range of poets and poetry. I particularly liked this recording of The Owl and the Pussycat!

8 ) The Poetry Society aims to ‘advance the study, use and enjoyment of poetry.’ They have a large collection of downloadable lessons in their Poetryclass section as well as links to recommended websites.
