Review of the Year 2012

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 02:00 AM PST

At the end of last year, I published my review of 2011. 2012 has been equally busy, if not more so, with many new additions to my Teaching Websites and a fantastic new addition to my family. Here are some of my highlights:

Teaching Ideas

Teaching Ideas has been updated many times this year with new resources:

  • I started the year reorganising many of the subject pages as some of them were very long. I also created new images and printable banners for each of the topics covered on the site.
  • The ‘themes’ on Teaching Ideas are always popular, offering free ideas, resources, videos (and more) linked to different topics that are taught in schools. This year’s new themed included OlympicsCastlesToys and Halloween. I’m currently thinking of new themes to make next year, so if you have any suggestions or requests, please let me know!
  • In the October half term break, I moved the books and resources from my Teaching Library site over to the Literacy section of Teaching Ideas. The new Teaching Ideas Library has free ideas / resources linked to over 150 popular children’s books. Next year, I’m planning to continue to add new books and also make some resources about different authors too.

  • I also set up a new Paperbank section on Teaching Ideas. This part of the site has free printable paper templates, including squared paper, lined / handwriting paper, shape templates, music (manuscript) paper and much more!
  • Lots of other great resources have been added to Teaching Ideas, including the popular Picture Puzzles, new photo packs and a Mega Maths Mat. I’ve also been able to add many of the wonderful contributions that have been sent by different teachers. If you are able to share a resource, please let me know.
  • Working ‘behind the scenes’, I’ve also spent some time optimising the site, so that it is quicker to load.

Thank you to the many wonderful teachers who continue to provide feedback and share their resources with Teaching Ideas. Thanks also to RM who host the site.

Teaching News

There have been over 150 posts here on Teaching News this year. Some of the most popular ones have been my series of ‘10 Resources‘ for popular events. The Resource Site of the Week posts have also been a great way of recommending some fantastic education sites for teachers. Don’t forget to get in touch if you know of any brilliant blogging teachers for a new series of posts in 2013. My continued thanks go to Teachers Building Society who sponsor Teaching News.

Teaching PhotosTeaching Photos

Teaching Photos is our gallery of photos showing classroom displays and bulletin boards. This year, the site was redesigned and updated to include lots of wonderful new pictures that have been submitted by teachers. If you have any photos of your own displays that you are happy to share, please get in touch.

Teaching Videos

Teaching Videos now features 3,000 educational videos that teachers can use to support learning in their classroom. Almost 1,000 of these have been added in the last year and the videos have been viewed over 6 million times altogether! I’m looking forward to continuing to search for great videos and add them to the site next year.

Teaching Events

Teaching Events was also redesigned this year and I started making resources to help teachers to use the events to support learning in their classroom. This is definitely something that I am keen to continue doing next year.

Teaching Appz

After writing a few (extremely popular) posts here on Teaching News about educational apps, I decided to make a new site that highlights some apps that can be used in schools. Finding good quality apps in the various app stores can be impossible, so Teaching Appz aims to help teachers find apps according to subject / topic / age group / device. The site has been extremely popular in its first year and I was very proud that the site was able to support the recent Teachmeet iPad event too.

More updates

At the end of last year, I was celebrating having over a total of 26,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter. This year, that total has risen to over 50,000 and we also have new accounts on Google+ and Pinterest. Don’t forget to follow us there too!

Personal

Our little boy, Joseph, was born at the start of the year and becoming a dad has been incredible. Managing the different websites, my teaching role and spending time with my family makes life very busy, but lots of fun! I must thank my wonderful wife, Helen, who draws the cartoon resources for the websites.

The future…

I’m starting to plan new ideas, resources and additions to my Teaching Websites for 2013. Teaching Ideas will be 15 years old next year, so I’m looking forward to celebrating that too!

What have you achieved this year?
